Please respond to the following:
In a recent interview, journalist Robert Levine, author of Free Ride , responded to the anti-S.O.P.A. crowd by saying this:
Free speech is very important in the U.S. It’s a more important value than copyright. In most countries it is. But there’s an argument on the other side. There’s a great quote by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor that says: “The Framers intended copyright itself to be the engine of free expression. By establishing the marketable right to the use of one’s expression, copyright supplies an economic incentive to create and disseminate.” That’s a pretty powerful argument on the other side.
Respond to the quote in your own words. What does it mean? Do you agree or disagree?

Ok, what???? Honestly, I don't understand what half of this means. -_-" Well, I'm guessing that she means that copyright gives us the power to use other people's work and share it with the rest of the world, but in order to use copyrights, there comes a price. Well, in my opinion I feel that copyright issues are petty and don't need to influence our lives in a dramatic way. Honestly, everybody's work gets stolen; its undeniable. Once you release something to the world, it's bound to get stolen. You can't change that. Trying to stop copyright issues is like trying to prevent the impossible. And back to the whole SOPA issue. The government has no right to intrude on the internet over copyright issues. Freedom of speech guys!!!! Ever heard of it? It still surprises me that the government is still trying to tackle this whole copyright issue. First they come out with SOPA, then PIPA, and even ACTA (don't get me started about ACTA). Geez, these old prudes need to stop living under a rock and actually use the internet for once. Then they'll understand what kind of an impact bills like these will have on the world. It disgusts me. The world is corrupt, and that's all I can say. THE INTERNET ISNT THE GOVERNEMNT'S, SO STOP TRYING TO PUT BORDERS ON IT AND GTFO! People these days.... >.>

I think this quote means that people out freedom in their speech. SOPA brings people to a phase where they have to make a petition to stop SOPA it is unbelievable. In Internet should not have piracy but have a freedom. In the constitution there is freedom of speech! The government is trying to do this copyright issue that's..... I can't even say a word for what is happening. You cannot change whats already in the Internet once it's in the Internet it's already there. YOU CANNOT CHANGE IT!!!!! The Internet is not the governments it's ours we share it!

I agree with this this article every story has two sides to it. Although the government may want to shut down the Internet they do not own it!!!!!!

Yahoo!!! I really don't understood this but this quote is about the government and the SOPA!!! This is a very serious problem do deal within our government. The government has no right to have the power of the internet. This isn't fair for the people all around the world. This is the matter of principle!!!

The quote by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor means that with a copyright you can do what you want all over the web, as long as it isn't plagiarized or contains false statements. The quote, “The Framers intended copyright itself to be the engine of free expression. By establishing the marketable right to the use of one’s expression, copyright supplies an economic incentive to create and disseminate.” means that copyrighting is the key to freedom on the world wide web. And with that key you can do as you please because that is your right. It means that copyrighting is the powerhouse to freedom of speech. I do agree with this quote but not with SOPA. Why does it matter so much on what goes on on the internet. Why do they care so much? Shouldn't they be worried about our job decline or our economy? But instead they worry about things like Google that has probably helped them succeed in their jobs. Tisk. If the bill did or does go through I have to have a social life and give up my tumblr and that is NOT happening. So I agree with the quote but not be SOPA.
ReplyDeleteI think sopa is a stupid bill. There is no common sense to it. Why woul you censor the internet?
ReplyDeleteYet I do agree with this article, every story has two sides

It means that p.eople want to express themselves and thats why they copyright because they want to express themselves or as long as long as they have a reason to. And I would agree. Peter z
ReplyDeleteI don't fully agree on the quote. Yes we do have freedom of speech. But taking someone elses credit doesn't give you the right to. Thats one reason why the S.O.P.A was created. Copyright. In Fact you wouldn't like someone stealing all your hard work you did. By the person just making the job simple by copying and paste. All the work you did was giving no credit. Unfair right ? So yes we do have freedom of right. Just use it correctly. Unless the internet will be gone one day. we are known for the technology generation, so use it right. Dont take someones work. i agree on on changing a few things but not blocking everything. its no point than. For every story there is two sides.

i do agree with the quote . There's a side to every story. However, i dont agree with the S.O.P.A bill. The government shouldnt limit internet use. The government should be focused on other important matters and not on the internet. There is a side to every story however, S.O.P.A bill is nonsense.

i agree with the quote and believe that the SOPA bill has both it's pros and cons. we should be able to surf the internetw wihtout any limtations. on the other hand, by censoring the internet it can prevent piracy and plagirmsm. all in all, i believe we should things the way it is because although not all u.s citizens are pleased with the SOPA bill not passing the majority is

i do not agree with is quote because people should be there own person and should not copy somthing that does not belong to them and this has to do with the soapa bill as well. i do not agree becuse people should not take something that is not theirs
ReplyDeleteNajier Drakeford 8b
One , thing that stands out to me is that why censor the internet ? The internet is a daily use in a regular day life and , the S.O.P.A bill cut that off .
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand , i agree with the bill because taking a stand for what you believe in ,in this case , stopped a lot of future actions with involving the internet . Especially when it comes to copyrighting S.O.P.A really took a stand and , changed a lot and proved they stand up for all in an act like this .

I don't think that the government should censor the internet. A lot of people use things like Google and Wikipedia for working purposes.people shouldn't take others work since they worked hard to do it and its not fair. I kind of agree with this quote.

i dont really get what the quote means...like what does it have to do with anything?? i get the free expression thing, but the rest? just sounds like jibberish to me...
ReplyDelete-leah w
i honestly dont understand it well but i believe that everyone has ther own right and they sehoudl be free for anything

I agree with this quote, I think what the woman was trying to say is that copyright is inevitable and it's good in some ways. It's good because it gives people the opportunity to share work with others. However, she's saying that it also comes witha price. I think that's right, and that copyright is bad, but that doesn't mean the internet should be censored.

Tell me what you think? Do we have the right to do what every one esle has a chance to do. Do we have rights in this country or what? Is the government really mean what they say about freedom? S.O.P.A says no to all of that. It tears freedom of the internet to shreads. We can't look up what we need to look up. You cant post what you need to post; all thanks to S.O.P.A. I am not saying our government is bad or our country has no freedom. S.O.P.A is just blocking what we need; our freedom of the internet. So think about that...
